We must not be upset because we experience emotions that are unpleasant but rather be thankful for them, because they highlight the pleasant ones.

We require consciousness for emotional significance. We can alter our conscious experiences by various means but have little control over the unconscious subcortical processes which are an essential component of emotions. The only positive way to avoid extremes of emotion is to raise our level of consciousness using constructive thought processes. The hazardous approach is to use addictive drugs and/or alcohol in an attempt to detach our consciousness from reality. Beware – addiction leads to misery which is an inevitable outcome of resorting to drugs!  Sadly, only those with dementia or stroke victims have the ‘luxury’ of escaping everyday emotions. So in order to lead a happy and meaningful life we should accept all forms of emotion, good or bad.  The trick is to cultivate awareness and   insight in order to determine the tipping point on the scale at which stage negative emotions become out of balance and are no longer part of our usual panoply of emotions.  At this juncture, outside help may be required which invariably begins with support from our loved ones and /or the interventions of a doctor or therapist.
