‘Emotions are the stuff of life, without them life would be extremely dull.’

How the Brain Controls all Pleasures Including, Sex, Food, Drugs, Rock ‘n Roll and Others is the latest book by Dr Gillman

Based on the latest key findings from modern neuroscience professional and lay people alike will discover how the human brain motivates us to seek pleasure and avoid pain.  It describes in simple language how the human brain translates pleasures arising from eating, drinking, love-making and music.

Emotions are the stuff of life, without them life would be extremely dull. Sometimes they are pleasant and sometimes relatively unpleasant. We can only appreciate   pleasant emotions because they are played out on our experience of unpleasant ones. We must not be upset because we experience emotions that are unpleasant but rather be thankful for them, because they highlight the pleasant ones.

We require consciousness for emotional significance. We can alter our conscious experiences by various means but have little control over the unconscious subcortical processes which are an essential component of emotions. The only positive way to avoid extremes of emotion is to raise our level of consciousness using constructive thought processes. The hazardous approach is to use addictive drugs and/or alcohol in an attempt to detach our consciousness from reality. Beware – addiction leads to misery which is an inevitable outcome of resorting to drugs!  Sadly, only those with dementia or stroke victims have the ‘luxury’ of escaping everyday emotions. So in order to lead a happy and meaningful life we should accept all forms of emotion, good or bad.  The trick is to cultivate awareness and   insight in order to determine the tipping point on the scale at which stage negative emotions become out of balance and are no longer part of our usual panoply of emotions.  At this juncture, outside help may be required which invariably begins with support from our loved ones and /or the interventions of a doctor or therapist.

This book reveals what dopamine and oxytocin have to do with how the brain controls pleasures

There is hope for those whose destructive past memories have had a negative influence on their emotional responses. These negative memories can be dealt with   using positive mental efforts in developing a focussed progressive mind-set or through psychological treatment.

Our drive states are neither positive nor negative, but are essential to our survival. It is the manner in which we deal with our drives and our ability to steer the course that makes them helpful or destructive.

We can only experience pleasure by wanting it. And pleasure leads to learning and pleasurable memories. Clearly, the more natural physiological pleasure we can cram into our lives the more positive memories we will create and as a result, sustain a happier life. So roll on pleasure! Many people may avoid pleasure because they are driven by guilt, often based on religious and/or moral grounds. Don’t fight pleasure, rather embrace it and lap it up!
